Peel back a layer or two,
Or three, or four, or more;
See yourself as you really are.
What if a stranger gazed into
Your hidden inner core?
Would you fade like a dying star?
Or would you finally resolutely
Let the light you've been chasing set you free?
No stubborn walls, no self-defense,
No sad excuses, no pretense,
No disguise, no cryptic hideaway,
No secret chambers in your heart:
The light exposing every part,
All your thoughts and feelings on display.
What's behind my furrowed brow?
What do my words obscure?
What do I fear or contemplate?
In the hazy here and now,
I seek a solace pure
When dark thoughts amalgamate.
What if I finally resolutely
Let the light I've been chasing set me free?
No stubborn walls, no self-defense,
No sad excuses, no pretense,
No disguise, no cryptic hideaway,
No secret chambers in my heart:
The light exposing every part,
All my thoughts and feelings on display.
