Love As It Ought to Be

She'll waltz tonight; she'll glide in midnight blue.
You'll have the first dance and the last one too.
You know she wants to please you; don't pretend.
She knows you are her truest, dearest friend.

Others have come and gone; you'll stick around.
You're not a player playing lost and found.
You're not at all intrigued by make-believe.
She knows your heart is true; you'll never leave.

It's a sure thing; it's a good thing.
It's not a passing fancy.
It's a lasting something;
It's love as it ought to be,
Yeah, love as it ought to be.

You had become convinced you'd never find
Someone patient, gentle, selfless, and kind.
She makes you laugh; you make her sing and shout.
You see her heart, and she's got you figured out.

It's a sure thing; it's a good thing.
It's not a passing fancy.
It's a lasting something;
It's love as it ought to be,
Yeah, love as it ought to be.

It's not an illusion based on fantasy.
It's give and take, and learning to adjust.
It's finding common ground when you disagree.
It's built on mutual respect and trust.

[instrumental interlude]

It's a sure thing; it's a good thing.
It's not a passing fancy.
It's a lasting something;
It's love as it ought to be.

It's a sure thing; it's a real thing.
It's not a passing fancy.
It's a help-and-heal thing;
It's love...
It's love...
It's love as it ought to be,
Yeah, love as it ought to be.
Love as it ought to be.
